The King will reply, 'Tell you the truth, whatever you did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
- Matthew 25:40 (NIV)
The Samaritan Shelter begin in 1986 when two people recognized the sharp increase in the homeless population. Once confirming this trend with the local police and Department of Social Services, these two individuals began speaking to others at their church about this growing crisis.
One thing led to another and before long the seven Lower Shore Presbyterian Churches had formed a board to formally combat homelessness. Through the generosity of area churches (of many different denominations) as well as the Presbytery for Lower Delaware and Eastern Shore of Maryland, this board was able to purchase and renovate a house in Pocomoke (we still operate in the home purchased in 1986).
For the past 22 years, we have operated a fiscally conservative, yet incredibly successful homeless shelter. In addition to the homeless shelter, we also operate a food bank and soup kitchen to reach out to the increasing number of individuals who are in need. Thousands of individuals and families have benefitted from the compassion and generosity that filters through the shelter on a daily basis.
We are governed by a dedicated group of individuals who diligently work to fight homelessness in the community. We are blessed to have an all-volunteer board, many of whom have served the shelter for years. Our board consists of a diverse group of individuals that bring various types of expertise to the table. The board meets on a monthly basis and holds innumerable fundraisers every year. Not only does the board dedicate time for monthly meetings, but most of them donate hours of their time a month within the shelter.
